CASA Connections: Uplifting Stories in the Time of COVID

While the world around us is shutting down and scaling back, our CASA Volunteers are working harder than ever.

Our CASA Volunteers are getting creative with their visits and advocacy. During a time of social distancing and quarantine, our CASA Volunteers are pivoting from in-person visits to new, unique methods of keeping in touch with their kids and ensuring their safety.

Check out this collection of videos, pictures, and stories to see how our CASA Volunteers are embracing this challenge.

Airplanes may be grounded, but with a little imagination and encouragement, CASA kids can go anywhere! Charlie, a 7-year-old, was having trouble acclimating to his new homeschool environment. Though he was trying his best and doing well in other subjects like social studies, Charlie was having trouble with his math lessons. That is where his CASA Volunteer Anne stepped in.

Anne worked with Charlie’s foster parents to come up with a way to both engage him and improve his math skills. Each day Anne prepares a new informative video for Charlie combining his interest in social studies and his love of traveling, to create a helpful math lesson. With Anne’s videos, Charlie can virtually travel to Hawaii to count volcanos and practice fractions through cutting tropical fruit into pieces to share. While in Hawaii, Anne also incorporates other valuable information, like science lessons on ecosystems and cultural lessons about food.

These videos have taken Charlie and Anne around the world, while also taking Charlie’s math skills to a higher level. The advocacy may look different and take place through a screen, but our Volunteers are as important as ever. Anne, and countless other CASA Volunteers, are changing these children’s lives for the better, despite the unusual circumstances we are all experiencing.
